UC Pumas Win Women’s State League 1

The UC Pumas women’s division one football team has taken out the Women’s state league with an emphatic 4 – 1 win over the Bellwest Foxes.

After finishing the regular season in equal 1st on points with ANU but dropping into 2nd on goal difference, the Pumas felt they had a point to prove. Going into the finals it was shaping up to be an all varsity affair with ANU favored over Bellwest and UC favored over Canberra City.

UC moved fairly comfortably into the Grand Final with the competitions two top goal scorers Matilda Hammond and both found the net to walk away with a 2 – 1 victory over Canberra City. Heavily favored ANU finished up 2 – 2 in their semi final against Bellwest and ended up losing 5 – 4 on penalties setting up an unlikely Grand Final match between UC and Bellwest.

Due to construction at the University the game was moved out to sunny Googong. Bellwest focused much of their attention stopping the competitions top goal scorers (mentioned above). As a result it seemed that the field opened up for the rest of the team. Gemma Varcoe, Mikeala Danvers, Rebecca Ryan and Chelsea Hobert all finding the back of the net to walk away with a 4 – 1 victory.

Congratulations to the UC Pumas Women for a brilliant season.
