Nationals Division 2 Recap
After a tough week of competition at the first UniSport Nationals Div 2, Team UC has come away with two gold medals and two teams promoted to the Div 1 competition in 2019. In all, UC had 52 student representatives competing at the event across 4 sports; mixed netball, men’s & women’s touch, men’s basketball and women’s water polo.
For the first time, UC entered the water polo competition with a women’s team. The team had a fantastic week and finished the pool games undefeated. On finals day Thursday, the girls came up against Western Sydney Uni who had been their closest competitors all week. The game was tight in the first half, with UC leading by 2 goals at half time. By the end of the game, UC had extended their lead to 6, claiming our first gold medal in water polo and becoming the first UC team to be promoted to Div 1 in 2019.
The win in women’s water polo was backed up by an impressive women’s touch team. The women’s team had a mix of experienced and new players, and were able to string together a number of consistent performances to force their way into the Grand Final. The team took on ACU in the final, after going down to them in the pool matches. UC was able to get first points in the final and were unstoppable from there, going on to win 6-2. The women’s touch team will join women’s water polo in 2019 at the Div 1 competition.
Men’s touch battled it out in a tough draw, that included a number of very strong QLD teams. The team started the competition strongly, with two convincing wins over CSU and ACU. Day two and three proved to be tougher with the team struggling to win a game. After finishing 6th in the pool, the team was able to maintain that ranking, going down to UQ in the 5/6th playoff.
Men’s basketball entered the competition with high hopes, with much of the team returning to back up their EUGs performance from 2017. The team got off to a rocky start and struggled to find momentum through the opening days of the tournament. With more than one game going down to the wire, UC managed to secure their first win against CSU, with a comprehensive score of 52 – 36. The win against CSU saw the team face Adelaide University in the playoff for 21st/22nd, going down by 2 points on the buzzer to finish 22nd in the competition.
The mixed netball team also had a tough week, winning 1 only one of their games. The win was enough to secure 12th place overall in the 15-team competition. The team showed a great level of resilience each game as they looked to improve on their performance, regardless of the score. The team was a combination of seasoned netball players and those who had never stepped onto the court. The determination of the team to get better each game was clear as they were able to bring the score lines closer each game.
Huge congratulations to all of our teams that competed at the UniSport Nationals Div 2 last week. Everyone represented UC with pride and should be incredibly proud of their efforts! Bring on Snow Nationals in August and Div 1 in September!
